Our Wooden Decks

A wooden deck is a classic. The most all-American of all outdoor living spaces.  With the advent of composite decking in the 1990s, some critics began to give pressure-treated decks a bad rap. However, a wooden deck is still a mainstay in the backyard. When designed and constructed correctly, and properly maintained, a wood deck can provide decades of service. Depending on your individual circumstances and budget, wood may be the best fit for you. Many homeowners are also just naturally drawn to the look and feel of natural wood — wood is good in their book!

Our Low-Maintenance Decks

Without delving too deep into the evolution and history of low-maintenance decking, synthetics have become a standard in the outdoor living space industry. From the first composites to the advent of capstock and today’s vinyl, PVC, and synthetic decking, technology just keeps improving. Deck Plus stays on the pulse of advances in low-maintenance decking,  and today’s synthetics can provide 20+ years of warranty protection. These decks will not degrade over time like wood, and they are also impervious to mold and insects. The best part, however, is that they require minimal maintenance to keep them in tip-top shape, a little soap, and water in most cases.

Looking For A Safer Deck?

The key to enjoying a safer deck is knowing it is built correctly. The structural integrity of a deck is the core of what makes your backyard deck safe. Proper maintenance is also crucial in keeping your deck in safe operating condition.

Did you know that May is Deck Safety Month? Yes, The North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) declared the event during the entire month of May to raise awareness of your deck’s safety.  With more than 60,000,000 decks in the US alone – 50,000,000 in residential backyards and 10,000,000 on commercial properties – it is estimated that 30,000,000 decks are past their useful life and need to be replaced or repaired. That is a lot of decks in need of attention! It’s important for homeowners to inspect their deck to confirm the structure’s integrity. And, when in doubt reach out to a deck professional so that you can extend your deck’s lifespan, improve its appearance, and increase livability — and most importantly, peace of mind.

Check Your Deck

  1. Check for split or decaying wood: Inspect different areas of your deck to be sure the wood is still sound. This includes the ledger board where the deck attaches to the house, support posts and joists under the deck, deck boards, railings, and stairs.

Pay special attention to any areas of your deck that tend to remain damp, are regularly exposed to water, or are in contact with fasteners.

To check for diminished integrity, use a screwdriver to penetrate the wood surface. If you can easily penetrate about a half-inch, it’s time for professional attention. Break off a piece of the wood to see what the problem may be. If the wood is soft and spongy, check for mold and decay. If you notice small holes in the wood, that may indicate insect penetration.

  1. Check the stairs for integrity: Be sure that all railings are firmly held in place. If they wobble this is an issue. Also, check the risers and stringers to be certain they are securely attached and not decayed. To ensure deck safety, keep pathways clear of planters, toys, and items that can present a tripping hazard.
  2. Check the flashing: Flashing is the metal or plastic guard that directs water out and away from sensitive deck areas. It’s often installed where the deck and house join together, keeping moisture and debris from collecting between the house and the deck’s ledger board.

Be certain the flashing is sound and firmly in place. Consider adding or replacing flashing if you notice areas that are allowing water to collect.

After checking your deck for safety and discovering that it may be compromised from years of weather, use, and wear. It is best to contact a professional, like Deck Plus. It may be that your deck needs redecking – or a new decking surface – and not necessarily demolished and replaced.
